Addicted To Weed(s)

A friend of mine put me onto this show.  I don't watch TV shows, and haven't in quite a long time - so this is the first TV show I've really watched.  It's amazing, the show never ceases to be interesting as more insane (yet realistic, considering everything) drama piles onto Nancy.  The main things that interest me about the show is the realism, likeable characters, and the fact that I usually can never predict what is going to happen next.  I haven't completely finished it, so I cannot offer a full review (I'm only on season 3, beginning 4) but so far I would definitely say the series is a must-watch.

New Music Tuesday: Ariel Bellvalaire

This weeks (late) new music Tuesday features extraordinary female rocker Ariel Bellvalaire.  The chick can sing, shred, put together some great production, and looks fantastic doing all of it - what is there to not love?  For a comparison, she sounds a bit like a mix of Heart and Hey Monday - or even 'RIOT!' era Paramore or Orianthi - actually instead of trying to explain her sound I'll just embed some of her songs.  She is currently working on her debut album - so subscribe on youtube and support this future rockstar!

So besides watching anime, I watched a lot of movies. I'm going to divide them into 4 tiers: Good, Great, Alright, and Shit.

Great

21 Jump Street [R] - Hilarious. I had to pause the movie a few times because I was laughing so hard. 9.5/10

Back to the Future [PG] - I shouldn't have to explain why this is amazing. 10/10

Back to the Future II [PG] - Slower start than the first, but still was amazing. 9.5/10

Back to the Future III [PG] - People give too much grief to this movie. Sure it's not as good as the first two, bit it's still amazing. 9/10

Howl's Moving Castle [PG] - The story and animation were both amazing. 9/10

Jeff, Who Lives At Home [R] - I... I kind of had my mind blown... 9.5/10

The 40 Year Old Virgin [R] - Hilarious. 9/10

The Hangover - Simply amazing. 9.5/10

The Hangover 2 - Just as, if not better than the first. 9.5/10

Tropic Thunder [R] - Hilarious movie with a top notch cast. 9/10

Good

Anchorman [R] - Lots of memorable lines. 8.5-10

Bad Teacher [R] - Bitches be crazy. 8/10

I Love You, Man [R] - Bromance story. Still funny. 8/10

Knocked Up [Unrated] - Great story. 8.5/10

Paul [R] - While I disagreed with it's views on Christians, it was still pretty funny. 8.5/10

Pineapple Express [R] - I... sort of zoned out while I was watching this, but what I saw was really good. 8/10

Scott Pilgrim vs The World [PG-13] - Still good the second time. 8.5/10

Alright

Borat [R] - I honestly couldn't finish this movie. I got bored. 6/10

Forgetting Sarah Marshall [Unrated] - Funny; however, I was forced to see Jason Segel's dick. Twice. 7/10

Get Him to the Greek [R] - Somewhat of a continuation of Forgetting Sarah Marshall. 7/10

In Bruges [R] - I didn't finish this movie, but what I saw was pretty good. 7.5/10

Superbad [Unrated] - I'm not sure why this movie got so much hype. It honestly wasn't very good. Except for the cops. I wish the movie had been based around them instead. 7/10

The Girl Next Door [Unrated] - I couldn't finish this one either. I got bored. 5.5/10

Shit

Bridesmaids [R] - Jesus Christ... I felt like I was in a Saw movie while having to watch this movie. I'm used to filth humor, but when the writers of a MOVIE have to resort to diarrhea and vomit as bases for their jokes, it get's pretty pathetic. 1/10

Gay Marriage?

Alright, now I understand posts like these don't quite fall under our site's normal range (we're a media site) but I feel like getting my views out there with the whole Chick-Fil-A crisis that has been going on recently.  I am a Christian, however, I don't always 100% agree with the Bible (it also supports slavery and extreme physical punishment of children for small disobedience), and in the issue of gay marriage is one of the times I don't.  There are two types of marriage, marriage through the church, and marriage legally.  Marriage legally comes with tax, death, legal, and more benefits.  My thought in this sense is why should gays be denied these benefits?  If they love each other, and want to live with each other and be each other's other half then they should be entitled to the same benefits a man and a woman receive, even if it's not called marriage, which leads to my idea.  The word marriage is why it is a problem, marriage has a religious connotation, my idea (and I'm sure I am not the first to bring it up) is to call it a Civil Union and give them the same ceremony legally and the same benefits.  I believe the Constitution ensures separation of Church and State.  If that is true why is the fact that the most common argument against gay marriage is from the Bible?

TL;DR? : Separation of Church/State & Equal Right for everyone (both in the Constitution) should mean that Gays in some way should be able to receive the same benefits as straight married couples.  That being said, Chick-Fil-A has the right to say whatever they want, as they are a private business - even if it I think their view is absolutely stupid.

Let me leave you with this...

Unpopular Hip-Hop Opinions

Yes, yes, as a 'hip-hop head' I am presented with certain aspects of the genre I am not supposed to question and just accept. Unlike the other pawns that blindly follow these 'guidelines' I will openly disagree with a few of them.

1. Tupac & Biggie are extremely OVERRATED

^ Yeah, those guys.  First off, to get another unpopular opinion out there, Biggie, as a rapper, was miles ahead of Tupac.  Now there is no denying these two are amazing rappers, but they simply aren't the best rappers of all time.  Taking into account lyricism, delivery, flow, and overall content they simply don't match up to many artist that have made their mark on the genre since.  Hell, they weren't the undeniable pinnacle when they were alive - Nas, Rakim, Ice Cube, & Big L were all rapping around the same time these guys were and were atleast on their level.

2. Not All Mainstream Rap Is Awful

While there most definitely are terrible mainstream artists (Wacka Flocka/Flo Rida/2 Chainz/Nicki Minaj) there are also talented ones with more potential and credit than they are given simply because they were able to pull a breakout single.  J.Cole, Drake, B.o.B, Asher Roth, Big Sean, Kanye West, Rick Ross, T.I., Young Jeezy, ect. are some examples of artists commonly overlooked and pissed on by 'hip-hop heads' simply because they've gotten hot on the radio.  You know who else has gotten big on the radio? Nas, Lauryn Hill, Tupac, Biggie.  While the artists I listed aren't always on Nas' level, they do make dope rap music.

3. Immortal Technique is OVERRATED

Let me preface this saying I do listen to Immortal Technique, but like Pac and Biggie he tends to be overrated beyond his actual level of skill.  One way to tell how into 'underground rap' someone is, is to ask them who they listen to, and if their first response is Immortal Technique then you can generally assume they don't know anything about underground hip-hop.  Immortal Technique is the 'mainstream' of the underground.  He has a lot of talent, but I've seen people put his name up there with Nas, Jay-Z, Biggie, Pac, ect. and frankly, he's not that good.  What most people note about IT is his messages in his music, he has substance.  You know who else has substance? Lil B, seriously check out his album 'I'm Gay' he talks about a lot of real topics and social issues.  The problem with Lil B is that he isn't a good rapper.  IT faces a similar problem - he is good, but he is put on such a high pedestal because of his topics and themes that he just can't match anyone he's usually put with as an emcee.

4. Tech N9ne is Overrated

Why is the overrated not all capped like Biggie, Pac, & IT?  Because it's not as big a problem with Tech.  Tech is an amazing rapper, but again because of his 'gimmicks' (couldn't think of a better word for this) he is typically placed with artists far above his caliber.  In Tech's case his 'gimmick' is his speedy flow and multisyllabic rhyming.  The problem I have with Tech's multis is that more than often he is saying words just to rhyme, and it takes away from the message of the song and believablity of the emcee.  I'm going to address this problem in an artist that faces it to a much larger extent next.

5. Eminem Hasn't Released a Good Album Since 2002

I expect to have the most people disagree with me on this one.  Yes, 'The Eminem Show' was Eminem's last good album.  Encore was one of the worst albums I've ever listened to, Relapse, while having the best production Dre has ever made, was awful - facing the problem I described Tech N9ne having tenfold, and Recovery was an awful attempt at pop success, bad beats, a horrible yelling delivery, uninspiring features, and a boring attempt at a motivational sound.  From 1999 to 2002 there were very few rappers holding a candle to Eminem's skill (other than Nas & Jay-Z I really can't think of any).  He flawlessly paired countless rhyming syllables while keeping original, and descriptive themes very clear for the listener.  There has been glimmers of hope on his recent albums (Deja Vu on Relapse/Going Through Changes on Recovery) so maybe it is possible for Eminem to release more material on par with 'The Eminem Show'.

6. Jay-Z's 'Takeover' Was a Better Song Than Nas' 'Ether'

While Ether is a legendary diss track, I like to think Takeover is a better song.  Many of Nas' disses are childish name calling with only a few personals.  Jay-Z on the other hand had more damaging personals and better overall production.  Nas' diss had more comedy and I think that's why his is always brought up, it's more memorable and has more moments where you just think, "Did he really say that?".

That's all for this post, if I think of more I will do a part 2 in the future.

Hyperkin's SupaBoy REVIEW

I spotted this in my local mall's 3D Games (& Toys) and returned the next week with enough old games and accessories to get it (it runs between $85.99-89.99). This product plays SNES cartridges both on a tv/anything with appropriate inputs and on the go. It is not small, however. It is slightly larger than a DS XL (I'm approximating because I don't own a DS XL). As for gameplay, it works. There are times when the game will freeze or not load, but that happens on the original SNES as well, so it's not exactly a fault of the console. The joypad is a bit awkward - it just feels cheap and not as responsive as it should be. The audio is loud and clear, and the screen, while not huge, definitely works. One problem I've had, and it may just be my unit, is once it has erased my save on my Legend of Zelda: Link To The Past game - this is not a huge deal for me because I'm not an extremely competitive player and just throw it in when I feel like having fun, but I know this may be a deciding factor for some people out there. Also when outputting to a TV you need an actual control to play, you cannot use the system itself, but the system comes with two open controller ports. The battery life is good and rechargeable, so no complaints there. All-in-all I am happy with the SupaBoy, and while it can definitely be improved upon, it is a great product if you want to play some Super Mario World/Link To The Past/Ect. on the go.
